There are interesting architecture details within this house. Keep in mind that the owner and builder, Miles Whitehurst was 21 years old when the the house was completed in 1856.
Note the small knob at the apex of the main hall arch. It is believed that this was used to hold an oil lamp.
On the stair frame, you can see a hand-made dovetail joint. Talented craftsmanship is evident.
Originally, long porches existed on both sides of the house.
Note that interior door and window side trim is tapered wide to narrow, bottom to top. The top of each frame is "peaked". Doors have transoms.
At sometime, one of the original porches was enclosed and an addition was added to the back. Originally, meal preparation and clothes washing, etc was done in other buildings, located behind the main house. Remember that was 1856!
